Ostrava Zoo Run for Kukang

Put your foot to the plough and help save me! This was the motto of the first year of charity run hosted by the Ostrava Zoo together with SSK Vítkovice athletic club to support The Kukang Rescue Program. The run took place on August 30, 2016 in the Ostrava Zoo area and all the runners had a unique chance to see the zoo after the closing time, that means in time when a usual visitor can´t get in.

Registration of runners in front of the Ostrava Zoo entrance

Apart from the fact that the Ostrava Zoo offers unique spaces for hosting such huge events, the run took place there because the Ostrava Zoo is the general partner of the rescue program. The capacity of registration for the run was filled already a few days before the start and we are very pleased that more than 800 runners of all ages decided to put their foot to the plough in saving slow lorises on the other side of the world – in Indonesia.

Even the smallest runners could participate in the run as there were three different routes to choose from, namely 1 km, 2.5 km and 5 km long. Running time of each runner was measured by a chip that everyone received at the start. Everybody became the winner of the run and that was sealed by medals for all the participants. After the end of the run, a raffle of start numbers took place and the winners were given for example a package of Kukang souvenirs, sweets from sweet-shop, cinema tickets, and many more. The winner of the main prize will have the opportunity to feed elephants in the Ostrava Zoo.

The run itself took place in the evening hours, however, visitors of the Ostrava Zoo could meet The Kukang Rescue Program members during the whole day. For everyone interested to learn more about the program or to support it by purchasing some of the products, the Kukang stand was prepared in the Zoo area. Besides buing an already finished product, even the youngest visitors could make their own bracelet or bag with a slow loris motif, or change into a slow loris thanks to face paints in hands of The Kukang Program members.

Many thanks belong not only to those who decided to help save slow lorises by their participation in the run or their visit of the „Kukang stand“, but also to all who took part in creation of this great event and to all the partners and volunteers helping with its organization. Proceeds from the event will be used to support The Kukang Rescue Program, namely to equip the clinic for slow lorises, to build cages in the rescue centre and also to implement awareness-raising activities of the program.
