13. report – April-August 2016 - Five successful months: two slow lorises, three buildings, three new animal keepers, five Slow loris days, a charity run and much more

This report is a summary of events that took place from April to August. Right at the beginning, it is our pleasure to announce that The Kukang Rescue Program has received an official support from a group of experts on prosimians called Prosimian TAG of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) and has been included into an „In-situ plan on conservation“ of this expert group. Here is a summary of the most significant events of the past five months supplemented by many photographs.

Cooperation with local governmental agency on enforcement of laws on slow loris protection

In recent months, the rescue and rehabilitation centre accepted two new slow lorises – a male and a female. Both slow lorises were youngs, most probably freshly captured from the wild, and thus have a good chance to return there.

In the rescue centre, we finished the construction of a small building serving as a warehouse and workroom for builder and coordinator of zookeepers, Mr Komar. Apart from that, adjustments of the land were being finalized, and we built an entrance gate and a fence around the quarantine.

In a proximity of the rescue centre, a house for visitors and volunteers is being reconstructed. This house for guests has a few separated rooms with private bathroom and a big garden where we plan to organize educational activities.

Raising awareness about the illegal trade in animals and protection of slow lorises

According to an International Animal Rescue´s research focused on slow loris owners in Indonesia, students apparently make up a large proportion of people buying slow lorises. This is one of the reasons why we organize awareness-raising events at local schools. Since April, we have organized such events on three schools, namely at SMP Negeri 2 Sibolangit, SMA Katolik Bandar Baru and SMP Karya Bersama Sukamakmur, located in areas of occurence of wild slow loris populations. Main program of these events is a lecture, discussion and simple knowledge competitions. Overall 237 students participated. At the beginning, they always fill out a simple questionnaire by which we check their attitude and knowledge of animal conservation. They fill out the same questionnaire also after the lecture. By comparing both questionnaires we than verify attention of the students and also the effectivity of the whole event. Evaluation of results help us improve methodology of these awareness activities.

August 17th is an Independence Day of Indonesia that is being celebrated across the whole country. We used these celebrations also for raising awareness about illegal trade in animals during celebrations in the Sembahe village known for trading fruit bats for medical purposes. People buy fruit bats in hope that their consumption may help treat asthma. Aim of the event was to inform the general public by discussion on how purchasing slow lorises and other protected animals is illegal and that they are very unsuitable house pets. To celebrate the Indonesian Independence Day and as a tribute to local people, we had a traditional flower board made, called „bunga papan“.

Since April, several lectures have been organized also in the Czech Republic. We had a lecture in the Carpe Diem jazz club in Prague during an event hosted by our partner organization „Neotáčej se zády“ and we also presented our project before a lecture of the traveller Dan Přibáň in the summer cinema in the Provodov village near Zlín. Our next lecture took place on 7th of April in the Jihlava Zoo at the commission for prosimians of the Union of Czech and Slovak Zoos (UCSZOO), we had 11 lectures at the ZŠ SNP 6 elementary school in Ústí nad Labem within a school project called „Conservation of our planet on the example of Indonesia“, and we also talked in the senior house Dobětice in Ústí nad Labem.

On 20th of April, a „Day for slow lorises“ took place at the ZŠ Tuchlovice elementary school in Kladno. Children created small slow loris statues that were displayed in the leisure centre Labyrint in Kladno. Many thanks belong to all the children and teacher Mrs Katerina Sichova.

On 4th of June, a project day focused on presentation of all the international project in which the Liberec Zoo participates took place in the Liberec Zoo area. The program was created in cooperation with schools from Liberec and surroundings, and a team from a third class of the Jeronýmova Grammar School and SOPŠG chose The Kukang Rescue Program. Students prepared many activities and made slow loris bracelets, coloring books and many other items for sale, and our thanks belong to the whole team!

On Friday 17th of June, Eva with the volunteer Kate took part in so called „Fortress of Knowledge“ in Olomouc. It was an event for elementary schools in Olomouc and surroundings. The aim was to show the children various information and activities in the field of science, technology, industry and nature. Part of it were also competitions, and for participation in them the children got stamps and at the end also a reward. At our stand, children could learn about our Kukang rescue program and about how a slow loris actually looks like and where it lives. Younger children did puzzles and older ones filled out a test dedicated to the life of these prosimians.

On 26th of June, a „Slow loris day“ for children took place also in the Olomouc Zoo. In spite of the rainy weather, more than a hundred children participated in the event and took part in „slow loris activities“. Children could fill out a quiz, make animals from modeling clay, define right slow loris diet according to pictures, do slow loris puzzles, search for slow loris pictures in the forest by telescope, make slow loris masks, try to climb a rope, catch plastic insects, look for differences in pictures and they also could have a slow loris painted on their faces. Purpose of this day was to educate children in a funny way about the biology of slow lorises and their live in the wild.

There are several news also in the I Am Not Your Toy! campaign. Subtitles in 9 world languages were added to the video „Slow Loris? The Worst Pet in the World!“ on the YouTube server, which enables its distribution to other countries. This video became viral – currently, it has been watched by several hundreds of thousands people just on Facebook and this number has been growing every day. In the upcoming months, we will update the campaign by drawings of the artist group ABUN (Artists & Biologists Unite for Nature), and videos and animations, for example by Zofie Zajickova.

In June, the Ostrava Zoo announced 9th year of the creative competition for tour to Croatia in cooperation with CK VÍTKOVICE TOURS travel agency. The task of this year was to create an original T-shirt for support of the I Am Not Your Toy! campaign. Many thanks to all the participants for their amazing products!

Thanks to sharing of the I Am Not Your Toy! campaign on Facebook, some people have started to actively react on illegal trade in slow lorises also during their travels in exotic countries. A Czech couple spending holidays in Thailand tried to actively intervene against Thai people offering taking photo of slow lorises for money on touristic places in the Khao Lak area. Despite the challenge, the police remained absolutely passive against this illegal activity. One way how to reduce such cases is to inform tourists via strong medialization.

On 30th of August after the closing time, a charity run called „Ostrava Zoo Run for Kukang“ took place in the Ostrava Zoo. Proceeds from the starting fee will serve for support of The Kukang Rescue Program focused on protection of endangered species of the Greater slow loris species in Sumatra, Indonesia. The main organizers were the SSK Vítkovice athletic club together with the Ostrava Zoo, that is also a general partner of this rescue program. The motto of the whole event was „Put your foot to the plough“, highlighting that by their presence on the run, all participants can support protection of animals on the other side of our planet.

It was the first event of this kind taking place in the Ostrava Zoo area, and the general public showed a great interest in it. The capacity of the run was 800 runners and it was sold out already a few days before its start. There were three running routes of different lengths – 1 km, 2.5 km and 5 km. All the registered runners received starting number with time chip to measure the time of their run. During the whole day in the Ostrava Zoo, visitors could enjoy an accompanying program that introduced the activities of the rescue centre, and they also had the opportunity to meet the workers of the centre in person and learn some actual news from Sumatra. Children could change into small slow lorises or other animals thanks to face-painting, and also other activities were prepared – printing on fabric, wire knitting on glass, beading of slow loris appliques made of felt.

Creating the Indonesian team

During recent months, our team of animal keepers taking care of slow lorises in the rescue centre underwent a training. Currently, this team consists of three animal keepers – Mrs Rosida Br Malau, Mr Purba Tarigan and Mr Bebas Sitepu. All of them underwent three-month training led by Lucie where they learned about the system of work in the centre, about preparation of right slow loris diet, cleaning and preparation of cages, and last but not least, about observing slow lorises.

In May, the awareness coordinator Novi went for a training in our two partner organizations. The first one was the education and conservation centre KWPLH (Kawasan Wisata Pendidikan Lingkungan Hidup) in East Kalimantan (Indonesian part of Borneo) near the Balikpapan city. This centre takes care of a group of seven sun bears that were confiscated from private owners and that can never be released back into the wild again. The centre is primarily focused on environmental education and Novi gained valuable advice and experience in management of educational and awareness-raising activities. The second organization that Novi visited was Yayasan IAR Indonesia and their rescue and rehabilitation centre for slow lorises in Java near the Bogor city. IAR is our partner organization thanks to which we have gained valuable advice and experience in taking care of slow lorises, and Novi also discussed there awareness campaign management and work with people. We are really grateful to both of these organizations, their members and employee. They all deserve many thanks for their willingness!

In conclusion

Since April, a lot has happened. Besides mentioned activities, also an annual meeting of the Czech part of the Kukang team took place, we participated in the annual meeting of the Czech Coalition for Biodiversity Conservation (CCBC), we visited the Asia Far and Near festival in Prague, NGO market in Prague and a multi-genre festival Fragments of 5 Continents in the Jihlava Zoo. The „I Am Not Your Toy“ team from the Olomouc Zoo took part in this year of Zoo Games taking place under the auspices of the Prague Zoo between 17th and 19th of June. In total, 15 zoological gardens from the Czech and Slovak Republic participated and our team took the beatiful second place.

Behind all the activities and events is the work and willingness of many people who deserve many thanks. Our thanks belong also to all the organizers, volunteers and partners of the „Ostrava Zoo Run for Kukang“ and also to others who have supported us finacially or in other way. Many thanks also to Jitka Vokurkova, Petr Piechula, Zdenka Dvorakova and Triko4u.cz company for help in recent months. Many thanks also to everyone who take part in slow loris conservation.
