In 2015, we built the “Kukang Centre” in the village of Bandar Baru, North Sumatra Province, which houses the “Kukang School”, our office, and also the first specialized rescue and rehabilitation centre for confiscated illegally sold or kept slow lorises in Sumatra. The centre is located less than 2 hours away from the provincial capital of Medan, an important hub for the illegal wildlife trade in Indonesia. The fact that such a facility was lacking in Sumatra effectively made it impossible for local authorities to effectively combat the illegal slow loris trade. The rescue and rehabilitation centre consists of a clinic, quarantine, and rehabilitation cages and meets all necessary standards for the quarantine and rehabilitation of animals and their welfare. The slow lorises, which successfully went through the rehabilitation process at the centre, were released back into the wild. Unfortunately, animal rehabilitation is now not in operation due to bureaucratic problems.
